Using Drone data in agriculture

Using a drone, or Small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS), in agriculture is like being able to see your field from an airplane, but you are also able to zoom in right above the plants. Growers are increasingly discovering that drone data is an invaluable tool, both for its ease of use, and for its many applications in agriculture. Regardless of the crop or region, growers who integrate sUAS into their work quickly realize that they offer many possibilities. Growers will continue to expand the use of sUAS data to make life in the grove more streamlined, efficient and informed.

Automated Tree Counts
Polk Drones has developed a GIS application to conduct complete, accurate tree counts. Instead of relying on time-consuming manual counts taken by driving up and down each row of a grove with a hand-clicker, drones are used to compile automated tree counts of entire groves in a matter of hours.
Turnkey Solution for Tree Counts and plant health:
$12 per acre, per year. Includes one drone flight per year and monthly updated satellite imagery.

We can fly your groves if you prefer to use your platform of choice:
$6 per acre for flight only. Includes Multispectral and RGB imagery. ($250.00 minimum)

Assess and Clean-up Damage After a Storm
sUAS data paired with a detailed report, helps assess the extent of the damage. Instead of relying on traditional ground scouting, which could easily miss catching large portions of a downed crop, a sUAS is used to capture a complete picture of the field/grove. Then, with just the click of a few buttons, a detailed crop damage report is generated directly from an online dashboard. The report includes a calculation of crop loss and a categorized visual representation that provides a far greater understanding of a storm’s damage. sUAS data can not only estimate the extent of damage, but in some cases can even help when clean-up is needed. If a storm tears through the fields, tossing debris throughout the crops, the sUAS visual representation may depict debris hidden by standing vegetation and may help the grower plan accordingly to efficiently remove it.

Negotiate Fair Crop Loss Percentages
As every grower knows, crop loss is always a possibility — and that’s why many choose to insure their crops. But because insurance adjustors sometimes only have time to walk small sections of a damaged field, gaining an accurate picture of the loss can be difficult. sUAS data can be used to help a grower recover a fair loss percentage after crops are decimated for unforeseen reasons. Annotated crop health displays, produced in just hours, may convince an insurance inspector to re-inspect the field after their initial loss estimate falls short of expectations. Thanks to the detailed information provided by drone data, the adjustor may take a second look at targeted areas and ultimately offer a far higher loss percentage.

Assess Slope and Drainage After the Harvest/Or Planning Stages of a Grove or Field
With crop cover out of the way, a drone-generated elevation display may be used to get a sense of the slope and drainage of a grove or field. Paired with easy-to-use volume measurement tools, growers can estimate the cut and fill of future terraces and waterways with non-legally binding relative accuracy.
